a little bit more about me and herbs
Chinese Medical Herbalism got stirred into the cauldron in 2020 when I started acupuncture school. I knew that herbs would be part of my education but I truly had no idea that it would be such an extensive portion of our curriculum. This is where I got really serious about my allyship with plants and truly consider each and every one of them to be a dynamic intelligence of its own. Chinese Herbalism initiated me to the importance of understanding plants in relationship to each other. Chinese Herbalism works in the formulary model, similar to Rosemary Gladstar’s 3 Points system in Western Herbalism. It has been an honor to learn how to combine and process herbs so as to enhance their strengths, balance out their harshnesses, harmonize their synergistic functioning and even send a formula to a specific area of the body.
I am passionate about herbal preparations for a few reasons: I love being a mad scientist in her laboratory of course, but I most love creating or sourcing the physiological delivery method that is going to resonate best with you, your body and your lifestyle. A common question in herbal medicine is - what is the best form in which to take your herbs? raw/decoction? tea? tincture? capsules? tea pills? granules? topical? diffused/steamed? The answer - whichever form gets the herbs into your body.
When consulting, I have a very very very limited number of herbal brands that I recommend or work with when making custom formulas. Sourcing organic herbs from farms and companies who are GMP-certified (Good Manufacturing Practice) is of the utmost importance to me as I uphold my personal and professional integrity. Often a first consultation will result in my suggesting 1-3 “patent formulas” these are usually capsules, tea pills, tinctures or granules that are sometimes ancient, sometimes modern combinations. I like to start this way to see if we are going in the right direction. After a week or two with the patents we can usually determine how things may need to be modified in a custom formula to best serve you and your health goals. At that point we can discuss what the best format is for getting your herbs into (or onto) your body!
One of my favorite things about herbalism in general is that it is for everyone and it is one of the best educational platforms for any human to become more empowered in their relationship with themselves and the earth. Working together is truly a collaborative experience and quest. Though I may have expertise in herbal medicine, you are the #1 expert on YOUR own body! I will always prioritize understanding and defer to honoring what you are experiencing as our primary guiding principal in this collaboration.
I have been wild-foraging and making herbal medicine since 2010! My journey with Western Herbalism emerged organically from many angles. First and foremost - being blessed to be surrounded by many incredible farmers, herbalists and medicine-makers. I have also been blessed to be a lifelong walker (perhaps wanderer) especially walking my dogs in the woods, meadows and what I refer to as the (sub)urban thicket. I wanted to know who all the plants were and quickly discovered that much of what we consider to be “weeds” and even “invasives” are medicine! I love to remind myself (and others) that we “weed ‘em because we need ‘em.”
